Altmetrics are a loose collection of metrics designed to measure the ways in which people interact with scientific publications online. When they were first introduced they were hailed as a new way of evaluating the impact of scientific research, but subsequent research has raised questions about what, if anything, they actually measure. This presentation will provide an introduction to what altmetrics are, what they are supposed to do, and what is actually known about them.
